Home is often full of distractions which can make it hard to get stuff done. But with a few simple strategies you can maintain productivity and create an effective work environment that you can enjoy in your pj’s.
1 – Set a schedule and stick to it. Decide with your employer what hours you will work. This is crucial for accountability and communication – your colleagues need to know when you will be available. An important aspect of this is to schedule breaks. You will need breaks to eat, stretch, and clear your mind for a minute. Just 5 minutes can make a big difference. With breaks scheduled into your day you’ll be less likely to burn out midway through the day. It can also be helpful to set a timer on your phone when you start a break so you don’t get distracted.
2- Create a dedicated workspace. Even if your home layout isn’t ideal, you can create a workspace with a table and chair. Make sure you have everything you need in this space and make it away from distractions as much as possible.
3 – List your priorities for each work session. Don’t worry about accomplishing a long to do list each day. Just write down your top 3-5 tasks for the day and stay focused on those. If you’re working on a big project, break it down into smaller tasks that you can accomplish in a work day so you can see the progress you’re making and feel that sense of accomplishment.
4 – Keep a log of time worked and what you accomplished. This is important to show productivity to your boss if needed and to keep yourself on track, motivated, and accountable. A simple spreadsheet works well. List the date, time, and tasks worked on or accomplished. You can also add questions you have or resources you need to continue so that you can follow up with others as necessary.
Employers are going to be implementing work from home more and more, so use these strategies to make sure you’re prepared to do it effectively if needed. If you’re job searching, apply these tips to your work on your job search to be efficient and practice working from home.
